Where should we begin? Over the next several weeks, I will be immersing myself in the rapidly advancing world of music. I'll start at the bottom by uncovering the fine print of copyright laws and past lawsuits over issues of copyright and ownership. From there I'm going to move into the history and technological advancements of how we listen to music and eventually the recent trend of electronic sharing. I want to ask questions such as "Has illegal downloading been recognized in the media? How? What does the new technology available to us tell us about the music industry? What do they want us to know? What are we not supposed to know?" In terms of free downloading, I want to really dive in and expose its effects on everyone involved (established musicians, new/upcoming musicians, managers, music venues, dedicated fans, potential fans, etc); who benefits and who suffers, and the way this has revolutionized our generation's perception of music and musicians. In terms of musicians I want to examine their social networking and what are the benefits/disadvantages of being in constant contact with your fans. Do we subtlety judge musicians more based on their music or by their accessibility? I hope to also understand the way new technology has been utilized by musicians in the recording process, by music venues in terms of promotion and advertising, and by the fans to enhance their listening experience in general. Towards the end I will (hopefully!) have enough information accumulated to evaluate the advancing musical technology in our society and the presence or absence of the participation gap. I am looking forward to discovering opinions and information new to me which can enhance my understanding of a topic I love! By the end I hope to have a much better grasp on what makes the music industry crumble, what makes it flourish, and the role technology has played and continues to play in the song of our generation.
